This is a super simple tutorial about one of the greatest scrubs you can prepare for you skin. The best part? It’s cheap and can be made from your kitchen.
For this scrub I used brown sugar which is much smoother than table sugar, which typically has sharper edges on each grain. Sugar is also has glycolic acid, which helps cell turnover and renewal. Another acid present in sugar is AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid), another helpful chemical exfoliant. Speaking of exfoliation, the most obvious benefit of sugar is that its crystal are a great mechanical exfoliant.
The second ingredient is coffee. More specifically instant coffee. It’s not as strong as a fresh brew, but it is also a good exfoliant. Another added benefit would be the revitalising effects of caffeine. This drug stimulates blood flow in your skin which has many perks for your skin: cell renewal, skin tightening, redness reduction, antioxidant properties. Also, you should note that coffee can have a slight ‘bronzing’ effect on your skin.
Argan oil can be substituted for any other oil of your choice, but argan oil works wonders on my sensitive skin. Alternatively, coconut oil and castor oil will suffice.
Once I’ve rounded up my ingredients and a small mixing bowl, I mix the brown sugar and the coffee at a 2:1 ratio. Add just a small amount of oil to make the mixture into a thin paste. The end result is a dark, sticky paste.
Now you can apply the paste to a wet face, but be sure to keep your hair away from your face to prevent the paste from getting into it. With your fingers, apply a small amount and gently rub it on your face and neck. Keep at this in circular motion. Afterwards, leave it in for about a minute or two. If the paste is too runny, then you may have added a bit too much oil. When you’re finished, wash out your face with lukewarm water and pat dry. Don’t forget to moisturise afterwards.
