Closing The Gap

There is a chasm between the generations and it is even more apparent as time goes on.

Businesses need to capitalise this and use it to their benefit. The disparity in knowledge and skills is often seen as a disadvantage, but with the right tools, it can be life-changing.

Older generations have a wealth of business knowledge, especially around corporate culture and history. Therefore, developing a way to impart that knowledge to the younger millennials is crucial to staying open for business.

The forward-thinking millennial can provide insight into the modern world, even though it is constantly changing. Their tenacity allows them to adapt to these changes with ease. The main challenge businesses face is communication within their own corporate environment.

In order to change that, businesses must change the way they communicate. It is one small step that gets you closer to a better business.

Playing Fair

As a business owner, a large part of your strategy is to outshine competitors but savvy entrepreneurs know that it is also smart to create and maintain relationships with them.

For those wondering how to approach competitors, here are a few tips.

Make the first move. Don’t be anxious about blindly reaching out to competitors. Remember that you have each started or run a company in the same industry. Therefore you both likely have a shared passion for the service you provide, product you sell or problem you solve. You will probably find that you have a lot in more in common than you thought.

Be prepared to say no. Before you pick up the phone, prepare for the tough questions. There is a line between the information you can and can’t share with a competitor, such as the direction of your company. A competitor may — intentionally or otherwise — ask a question that you don’t want to answer. The last thing you want to be is flustered when put on the spot so be ready for this in advance.

Continue the relationship. If you are unsure of how to continue the relationship, find topics that won’t put either of you in a vulnerable position or make them feel threatened. Try discussing outside dangers to your business that are on a macro level. Since you are in the same industry, both of you are facing similar threats and by talking to each other about it you can find a common ground.

Living With A Purpose

Living a more sustainable lifestyle has numerous advantages and benefits. And not only for the environment and planet earth, but for your personal well being and happiness too. While it may be difficult to ditch old, unhealthy habits, the changes can help you to improve your life significantly. Even the smallest changes can make a great difference in the long run.

Become healthier and happier

One the first steps you can take to a more sustainable lifestyle is changing the transport you use to commute to work. The positive effects of exercise are not to be underestimated in the often manic pace of modern life. Regular cycling can help you stay in shape and even reduce your stress levels. And just adding a mere 30 minute walk to your daily life can help you burn up to 150 more calories.

Save more money by wasting fewer resources

Speaking of wasting less of the world’s precious resources, in addition to the health benefits of switching to “green” energy, changing to a more environmentally-friendly transport method could leave you with extra cash in your pocket at end of the month. Other simple money-saving sustainable actions include reducing your energy consumption and disposing of unwanted possessions in a responsible fashion.

Increase your real world knowledge and practical skills

You can also save money while helping the environment by increasing your own knowledge and practical skills. For example, you could investigate how solar panels work and cut down your electricity and gas bills. Solar panels are a great investment.  It doesn’t have to be the Caribbean for you to benefit from sunlight: solar panels still produce impressive amounts of power on grey and sunless days. Adopting a more sustainable lifestyle requires a bit of research and constant self-education. If you are already adding solar energy to your home, what about composting in your garden? Or growing your own vegetables?

Chain Reactions In Business

The Domino Effect states that when you make a change to one behavior it will activate a chain reaction and cause a shift in related behaviors as well.

It capitalizes on one of the core principles of human behavior: commitment and consistency. The core idea is that if people commit to an idea or goal, even in a very small way, they are more likely to honor that commitment because they now see that idea or goal as being aligned with their self-image.

It can be created. It is within your power to spark a chain reaction of good habits by building new behaviors that naturally lead to the next successful action. There are three keys to making this work in real life. Here are the three rules of the Domino Effect:

  1. Start with the thing you are most motivated to do. Start with a small behavior and do it consistently. This will not only feel satisfying, but also open your eyes to the type of person you can become.
  2. Maintain momentum and immediately move to the next task you are motivated to finish. Let the momentum of finishing one task carry you directly into the next behaviour. With each repetition, you will become more committed to your new self-image.
  3. When in doubt, break things down into smaller chunks. As you try new habits, focus on keeping them small and manageable. The Domino Effect is about progress, not results. Simply maintain the momentum. Let the process repeat as one domino automatically knocks down the next.

When one habit fails to lead to the next behaviour, it is often because the behaviour does not adhere to these three rules. There are many different paths to getting dominoes to fall.

Meet A Contributor: Kerece Aziz

Born in the twin island state of Trinidad and Tobago (particularly Trinidad). She grew up in a household of six, which includes her mother, father and three elder siblings. Being the last child doesn’t mean she’s spoiled or pampered, but maybe just loved the most.

From a young age I’ve always had a connection with writing. I felt as though the pens and pencils were magical mediums that I could ask anything and they would write me the answer. Hence I was either always reading, writing or drawing a story and their characters.

By age 15 I had already completed my 3-part series called Black Chancery which is like a teenage romance, mystery and fiction. I also have a number of other works based on various theories and life perceptions.

I met my soulmate at age 17 and have been married for the past 9 years. This journey also inspired my second book (which I haven’t decided on a name yet) but it builds around the idea of a modest independent woman falling in love with the perfect, but gay guy.

Presently I’m doing a great deal of personal development and I honestly think I’ll have some future great writes.

Defining Success for 2019

A lot of us are afraid to fail. We believe it as a sign of weakness and can even come to regret ever taking that leap of faith. Well, contrary to this belief, a number of highly successful achievers often credit a failure or two, to their success.

Failure is a type of freedom. Why? Because the worst has happened. Now, you can relax and rebuild your life. You do not have to fail on a large scale, but failure in life is inevitable. There is no way to live life without failing from time to time. The only way you won’t fail is if you live so guardedly that you are barely living at all, wherein, you fail by default.

Failure drives us to change. Without it, where would we be today? Success does not come easy. Everyone must face one hurdle after another. It’s the only way to reach success. The reason being is that success must be maintained. For example, you’ve always wanted to buy a home. You finally purchase the home of your dreams. However, your home must be maintained. Once a goal is reached, you must have the tenacity to remain there and move higher if you wish. Without repeated failures, you do not have the know-how of sustainability.

The most successful people are those who are good at Plan B. Individuals who are good at “brushing failure off their shoulders” take the necessary steps to try again, usually with Plan B. In fact, Plan B may not even be a plan at all! Plan B is the “I can do it attitude.” Plan B, is the transition from failure to success.

Stressed Out

Many people feel overwhelmed by stress, especially when life gets busy. A lot of relaxing activities and getaways have a hefty price tag attached. That may put them beyond your budget. Fortunately, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to release a little pressure. There are many low-cost ways to set your mind at ease.

Meditate

You might think that meditation requires you to “clear your mind” of all thoughts and worries. But that isn’t always the case. In many popular forms of meditation, you direct your mental energies in a specific manner.

Exercise

Many people find emotional release through physical activity. Engaging your body occupies your mind and distracts you from to-do lists and frustrating situations for a while. Exercise also reduces your body’s production of cortisol, a stress hormone. It triggers your body’s production of feel-good chemicals, called endorphins.

Go for a walk

While vigorous walking can be a great form of exercise, even a slow stroll can help center your mind. Physically removing yourself from a stressful situation by taking a walk may help clear your mind and create a sense of distance from your worries. You may also find the natural scenery that many walking trails provide calming.

Stress can leave you feeling tired, anxious, and weary. Over time, it can negatively impact your mental and physical health. You may not be able to eliminate stress from your life entirely, but you can take steps to relieve it. You don’t need to spend a small fortune to start feeling better. Simply taking time out for an easy and relaxing activity may make a world of difference to your mood.

Is work stressing you out? Lots of people have a hard time finishing tasks that are challenging. Getting through to an audience is an especially difficult task if you don’t know how. Download our ebook How To Write To Captivate An Audience and you’ll get easy-to-read tips.

Where’s My Will?

There will come a time when you will feel lackluster, especially when it comes to doing your work. The willpower to do is somehow lost. How does one reignite the flame of passion?

It is important to remember that this all starts with you. If you don’t have the open-mindedness to challenge what is blocking you, then you will get nowhere.

We will lose motivation when we feel discouraged to form our work. This could be for many reasons; criticism is one of those problems. Often, we will find that our harshest critic is yourself.

We need to exercise more compassion in the world, including yourself. Creators tend to hold themselves to high standards – as we should. However, it is worth keeping in mind that we need to have faith in ourselves in order to grow.

Everyone has the potential to be their best, as long as they recognise that potential within themselves.

Now that you know how to get motivated, how will you get your audience motivated? Our FREE ebook gives you everything you need to know about engaging an audience with your words.
